The Opal®

Four basic parts. A world of possibilities. Our modular dome system brings together strength, efficient use of space and the flexibility to build around what your community needs.

A stronger idea, made simpler

Ken Laughren, our creator, founder and President, spent years refining the basic dome concept. Through extensive trial and error, he simplified manufacture and addressed the challenges of traditional dome construction to make the system commercially viable.

The result is a lightweight approach to robust shelter. Our designs aim to deliver the structural benefits of concrete at a fraction of the weight, using space and materials efficiently without giving up flexibility.

The Opal is designed for energy efficiency, long service life and minimal maintenance — a place to build a future, not just a temporary solution.

Just four parts. Countless configurations.

Straight, curved, curved with a door and a roof cap. By combining these four basic parts, we can create a wide range of configurations quickly and efficiently. Start with the space you need today, with room to expand as your plans grow.

01

Straight

Straight sections give the system flexibility beyond a single dome footprint.

02

Curved

Curved sections form the distinctive dome shell.

03

Curved with a door

A curved section with an integrated doorway provides access.

04

Roof cap

The roof cap completes the top of the dome.

Precision in the factory. Simplicity on site.

Opal parts are designed for factory manufacture to exacting specifications. Our planned robotic production line will support repeatable quality and consistent dimensions, so parts fit together accurately. Indoor fabrication also reduces the weather delays that affect conventional outdoor construction.

Parts can be transported to site and assembled by a small team of trained local workers with a few inexpensive tools. The business plan targets shell erection in about an hour for suitable configurations on a prepared site; larger layouts, foundations, services and interior fit-out require additional time.

One system, many uses

Transportable, modular and expandable, The Opal can adapt to the way people live, work, learn and gather.

  • Emergency and temporary shelter
  • Permanent homes
  • Commercial and industrial spaces
  • Agricultural buildings
  • Mobile schools and classrooms
  • Health clinics
  • Mosques and community spaces
